Reception Theory Homework

The Dominant Position

The Message within the video may be very clear to the reader therefore the audience may take the dominant side, this means they would enjoy the text more. This may mean that the audience could relate to it more as they could be experience similar incidents if they are of a similar age. Also if the genre of the film is one that is popular with the audience they will enjoy it because they like that specific genre of film.

Take the oppositional position;
The audience may take the oppositional side because the audience may disagree with the messages that are presented in the video. Another reason may be because the audience didnt like the genre of the video. Another reason could be because they are not the same age as the characters so they cannot relate to the activities that happen in the video.

Take the negotiated position;
The audience may take the negotiated position because they may like the genre be the same age. However the messages in the video are to complex for them to understand so they cannot follow the video.

My Storyboard

Film Opening Script

Script for ' The third from last '
Script for ‘Third from last’
Producer: Tommy Clark
Camera and editing manager: Jack Suters
Actors: Ben Sparrow, Jack Suters, Tommy Clark
Titles come up with bold title of the film, then it top and bottom corners names of who directed the film, the actors and that it is based on a true story.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNMeZldV-Rs
Ben is walking up a dark road on his way home; he then comes to a big dark house. The lighting at this point is very dark and dim, then music goes very slow and spooky.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCXUOZ-RLUw
The house looks dark with no lights on inside and Ben opens the door slowly as it creaks loudly (creaking voiceover). He is welcomed by pure silence in the house and goes into the lounge and puts on the tele. Over the shoulder shot of Ben looking into the lounge. Point of view shot of Ben taking his phone out of his pocket and ringing Jack as Ben hates being home alone.
Ben: Alright Jack what’s going on?
Jack: Mate I’m busy can you snap chat me please?
Ben: Ah, I hate being in home alone but yeah fair enough if you busy. Talk later mate.
Jack: Okay mate, Sweet. You sure you’re okay yeah you’ve been acting strange later.
Ben: Yeah yeah im fine, cheers anyway.
Ben puts the phone down and starts playing candy crush. The music behind goes slow.
He receives a snap chat from jack and reads in quickly and laughs to himself, TV is loud in the background, Ben then replies to jack using his switch camera.
Jack then texts Ben
Jack: What the hell is that behind you Ben I thought you said you were home alone.
Ben: Nothing you muppit stop trying to make a crap myself.
Ben looks behind him with tension music building up and nothing is there.
He then replies again saying there’s nothing behind me, your such a wind up.
Ben puts the phone down and a man with a knife appears in front of him.

A blank screen comes up and then the music from the first titles comes up again.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NNMeZldV-Rs

Make up research

We thought we could use a ghost/spirit within our film but we are not yet comfortable enough with our skills to edit a film to this qulatiy so we have chosen to choose a deamon and will use masks to show this.

Make up Research -

As we have chosen horror for our film genre we research a few make up techniques that were affective but as we are only amatures the results wouldnt be very good, therefore we decided to try a find a horror based mask. We have a range of about 3-5 good qality masks that we will chose between to use within our film.

Drag me to hell - Analysis

Analaiysis of drag me to hel

Analysis of drag me to hell opening scene

In the first shot of the opening scene we see a very large castle looking building. it looks a lot like a hospital type place due to the very well kept gardens out the front, and lots of rooms. The colour of this shot is dark and dull, which accompanies the naturalistic colours of the building. This could also mean it is linked to a place for older people with illnesses as it is kept very dark. Or also a place for mental people to go and get help.

The next shot we see is of the back of a truck pulling up to the place along with a woman and a young child in the back of it. The boy is wrapped up in a blanket which already starts to give the viewer a sense that something is wrong with the boy.

It the goes to the woman running up to the entrance of the place which is secured by very large gates. By having such large gates can mean the place is very strict on the people that go in their and out.

The family then go on to speak to the woman that opened the door. They tell her how their son is hearing voices. The woman then asks what he has done. By which the family respond saying, he stole a necklace from a gypsy woman. This quote then makes the viewer think about the gypsy woman. The reason for this is because she must have some sort of powers in order to do this to the boy.

The shots then go on to close ups of the boy looking very distressed. It flicks between him and shots of what he is seeing showing us that he has been possessed by something.

we then see the woman trying to get rid of the curse, only for bad things to happen. The so called ghost beats them up and then throws the boy over the stairs on to the floor.
The shot then goes to a fiery hole where the boy gets grabbed and taken in to the hole. The hole then closes up as the boy disappears, by which the title of the film then comes

Setting Research

Setting research

I have chosen Tommy Clarks house as my setting for my film opening. I have chose this venue because it shows a very strong sense of independence as he has a brick walled room within he’s room and he also has a good camera and a has good range of masks, make up and equipment to use within our film opening. We also had other venues such as Worley asylum but we decided that if we needed to request permission for this and if we need to take all the equipment there it will be much more difficult and we may not be able to alter the lighting as effectively as we can inside our selected venue. We also had an option of using Brentwood County High School however we decided within the hours given we would not be able to get the lighting and scenery as we would like to see we have altered our story line to fit a housing environment

Tommy’s house is located in Hook end, second avenue doddinghurst.

Conventions

opening scene conventions

in the opening scene of Django, we can see that the first shot is a wide shot of simply the scenery. We can see that the scenery isn't full of trees and houses, it is simply just lots of rocks, stones and very dusty paths. The shot lasts for about twenty seconds. By the shot lasting for this amount of time allows the viewer to take in what the place was like at the time. It also keep the viewer intrigued because it makes you want to know what will be linked with such a dull and boring setting. The titles appear in large red writing normally directors wouldn't want you to take your mind off of the intro but by having such outstanding writing makes the opening credits that bit more exciting. All this is accompanied by the theme song which, is quite an upbeat song, which creates a sense of foreshadowing in the sense of happy music along side boring scenery. The music they have used is non diegetic which helps promote the sense of foreshadowing. As the opening scene goes on there is many more shots of men being lead by two men on horses, whilst in hand and ankle cuffs. This then makes the viewer realise these men have been traveling through these terrible conditions as they are clearly the slaves of these men.

When the title of the film appears it is over the top of a shot of the slaves backs. We can see many whip marks on them as their backs are bleeding and are very badly cut. The large writing in red the creates the enigma by linking the two together.

Reception Theory

Reception Theory (Stuart Hall,1980)

Reception theory states that media texts are encoded by the producer- they are loaded with values and messages however, the text is then decoded by spectators. However, different spectators will decode the text in different ways, perhaps not in the way the producer intended. Stuart Hall identifies the three types of audience readings of the text:

  • Dominant or preferred - how the producer wants the audience to view the media text, watching a political speech and agreeing with it.
  • Negotiated - a compromised between the dominant and oppositional readings, where the audience producers part of the writers views, but has there own views on parts aswell.
  • Oppositional - when the audience rejects the preferred reading and creates there own meaning for the text

Lots of factors could affect whether we take to dominant negotiated or oppositional reading.
  • life experience
  • mood at the time of viewing
  • age
  • culture
  • belief
  • gender

The Audience could take a different perception to the film because if a there is a romance film gender will effect the perspective seen because most of the male audience will take the view of the male and most female viewers will take the view of the female within the film, this is because the same gender will  be able to relate to the characters feelings and emotions. Mood at  the time of viewing will also effect the way it is seen. If a viewer is very angry they will not be see the love as much as someone who is happy and relaxed will see the film. Life experience will determine how the film is seen in a way where the audience learn and see through the characters perspective how to deal with real life situations this is because they make it as realistic as possible through actors setting and narrative.

Male Gaze

What is the Gaze?

The concept of the gaze of one that deals with how an audience views the people presented.
For feminists it can be thought of in 3 ways:

How men look at women
How women look at themselves
How women look at other women

Gaze and feminist theory
Laura Mulvey coined the term 'male gaze' in 1975, she believes that in film audiences have to 'view; characters from thee perspective of a heterosexual male.
The Camera stays on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a mans reactions to these events.

The male gaze relegates women to the status of object. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.

In everyday life..
In the cornetto advert they emphasise on the female beauty when they are advertising an ice cream?
The advert uses the female to attract audience when in reality the woman has no involvement with the selling of the product the woman is completely irrelevant.

Todorov's Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Narrative theory and codes

Narrative has two parts : Structure, Elements.

All texts in media tell us some kind of story. The term narrative is the way this process of telling stories is organised, how stories are structured and the potentially understood.

Structure of Narrative

the structure of narrative is where Todorov's theory comes into play.
Todorov's theory states that there are five stages to every film.

1. A state of equilibrium
2. Disruption of that order by event
3. recognition that the disorder has occurred
4. attempt to repair the damage done
5. a return or restoration of a new equilibrium

Applying it to a film
1. Family moves into a hotel for dads business career
2.child hears voices and sees ghost, the mums sees that the father has done no work apart from writing ''all work and no play makes johnny a dull boy''
3.father tries to kill wife and son.
4.try to escape the terror
5. wide and son get in truck and drive away and escapes and live happily ever after.

Homework - Paranormal activity 3

1. Family move into new house as last was haunted
2.Youngest child starts talking to ghost
3.Ghost tries to kill other eldest child
4.try to escape terror
5.Family move house to escape the ghost

camera angles

The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.
Shot reverse shot-  is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character this is often off screen and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character
