Reception Theory

Reception Theory (Stuart Hall,1980)

Reception theory states that media texts are encoded by the producer- they are loaded with values and messages however, the text is then decoded by spectators. However, different spectators will decode the text in different ways, perhaps not in the way the producer intended. Stuart Hall identifies the three types of audience readings of the text:

  • Dominant or preferred - how the producer wants the audience to view the media text, watching a political speech and agreeing with it.
  • Negotiated - a compromised between the dominant and oppositional readings, where the audience producers part of the writers views, but has there own views on parts aswell.
  • Oppositional - when the audience rejects the preferred reading and creates there own meaning for the text

Lots of factors could affect whether we take to dominant negotiated or oppositional reading.
  • life experience
  • mood at the time of viewing
  • age
  • culture
  • belief
  • gender

The Audience could take a different perception to the film because if a there is a romance film gender will effect the perspective seen because most of the male audience will take the view of the male and most female viewers will take the view of the female within the film, this is because the same gender will  be able to relate to the characters feelings and emotions. Mood at  the time of viewing will also effect the way it is seen. If a viewer is very angry they will not be see the love as much as someone who is happy and relaxed will see the film. Life experience will determine how the film is seen in a way where the audience learn and see through the characters perspective how to deal with real life situations this is because they make it as realistic as possible through actors setting and narrative.

Male Gaze

What is the Gaze?

The concept of the gaze of one that deals with how an audience views the people presented.
For feminists it can be thought of in 3 ways:

How men look at women
How women look at themselves
How women look at other women

Gaze and feminist theory
Laura Mulvey coined the term 'male gaze' in 1975, she believes that in film audiences have to 'view; characters from thee perspective of a heterosexual male.
The Camera stays on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a mans reactions to these events.

The male gaze relegates women to the status of object. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.

In everyday life..
In the cornetto advert they emphasise on the female beauty when they are advertising an ice cream?
The advert uses the female to attract audience when in reality the woman has no involvement with the selling of the product the woman is completely irrelevant.

Todorov's Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Narrative theory and codes

Narrative has two parts : Structure, Elements.

All texts in media tell us some kind of story. The term narrative is the way this process of telling stories is organised, how stories are structured and the potentially understood.

Structure of Narrative

the structure of narrative is where Todorov's theory comes into play.
Todorov's theory states that there are five stages to every film.

1. A state of equilibrium
2. Disruption of that order by event
3. recognition that the disorder has occurred
4. attempt to repair the damage done
5. a return or restoration of a new equilibrium

Applying it to a film
1. Family moves into a hotel for dads business career
2.child hears voices and sees ghost, the mums sees that the father has done no work apart from writing ''all work and no play makes johnny a dull boy''
3.father tries to kill wife and son.
4.try to escape the terror
5. wide and son get in truck and drive away and escapes and live happily ever after.

Homework - Paranormal activity 3

1. Family move into new house as last was haunted
2.Youngest child starts talking to ghost
3.Ghost tries to kill other eldest child
4.try to escape terror
5.Family move house to escape the ghost

camera angles

The 180 degree rule is a basic guideline regarding the on-screen spatial relationship between a character and another character or object within a scene.
Shot reverse shot-  is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character this is often off screen and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character
