Todorov's Theory

Todorov's Narrative Theory

Narrative theory and codes

Narrative has two parts : Structure, Elements.

All texts in media tell us some kind of story. The term narrative is the way this process of telling stories is organised, how stories are structured and the potentially understood.

Structure of Narrative

the structure of narrative is where Todorov's theory comes into play.
Todorov's theory states that there are five stages to every film.

1. A state of equilibrium
2. Disruption of that order by event
3. recognition that the disorder has occurred
4. attempt to repair the damage done
5. a return or restoration of a new equilibrium

Applying it to a film
1. Family moves into a hotel for dads business career
2.child hears voices and sees ghost, the mums sees that the father has done no work apart from writing ''all work and no play makes johnny a dull boy''
3.father tries to kill wife and son.
4.try to escape the terror
5. wide and son get in truck and drive away and escapes and live happily ever after.

Homework - Paranormal activity 3

1. Family move into new house as last was haunted
2.Youngest child starts talking to ghost
3.Ghost tries to kill other eldest child
4.try to escape terror
5.Family move house to escape the ghost

  1. Todorov:
WWW: You have written the theory into your own words and linked this into your own film structure analysis.
EBI: You had linked more to the elements of the structure. What elements would you expect from each part of the structure?
