What is the Gaze?
The concept of the gaze of one that deals with how an audience views the people presented.
For feminists it can be thought of in 3 ways:
How men look at women
How women look at themselves
How women look at other women
Gaze and feminist theory
Laura Mulvey coined the term 'male gaze' in 1975, she believes that in film audiences have to 'view; characters from thee perspective of a heterosexual male.
The Camera stays on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context of a mans reactions to these events.
The male gaze relegates women to the status of object. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.
In everyday life..
In the cornetto advert they emphasise on the female beauty when they are advertising an ice cream?
The advert uses the female to attract audience when in reality the woman has no involvement with the selling of the product the woman is completely irrelevant.
WWW: Shown understanding of Mulvey’s theory through explanation of the theory in your own words and picking a suitable example from your own knowledge.
ReplyDeleteEBI: You had completed the section on the Scouting for Girls video. Also you need to explain your link to the Cornetto advert- how does this sexualise women? Is there any need to in order to sell the product? Explain yourself.
